Despite risks, market exists for breast milk sales
"Portland, Oregon - It is commonly called 'nature's
perfect food.' And with credentials like that, it's no
wonder breast milk is worth up to $2 an ounce on the

1/30/2006: Survey found Portland, Oregon Best City to
Have a Baby “Portland, Oregon was ranked the number
one Best City to Have a Baby in an analysis of 50 major
US cities by Fit Pregnancy magazine. The analysis gave
cities an overall rating and assigned grades from A thru
F for individual factors such as breastfeeding, maternal
and child health risk, birthing options and stroller
friendliness. Portland was one of only 5 US cities given
an A for breastfeeding.”
11/29/2005: New Study Reveals Breastfeeding May
Prevent Diabetes in Mothers “According to a recent
study found in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, the longer women breastfeed, the lower
their risk of developing diabetes. The study, which
involved 157,000 nurses who participated in two
long-running health studies and were followed for at
least 12 years, found that breastfeeding may change a
mother’s metabolism. These changes may help keep blood
sugar levels stable.”
8/1/2005: Breastfeeding acceptance up for World
Breastfeeding Week 2005 “According to a new survey
released today, more Americans in 2005 endorse
breastfeeding and are comfortable with women
breastfeeding in public, than one year ago. Men in
particular are more savvy about breastfeeding. The Ad
Council surveyed almost 1000 people before and after the
2004 launch of the National Breastfeeding Awareness
Campaign, and came up with the significant results”
6/17/2005: House strips SB 618 of employer mandate;
Leaves bare bones description of workplace accommodation
for 8% of Oregon Businesses “This session, the
legislature heard from physicians, nurses, public health
officials, Lactation Consultants, the Women’s Health
Alliance, AFL-CIO, Bureau of Labor and Industry and
parents about the importance of six months exclusive
breastfeeding for maternal and child health, and the
necessity to facilitate breastfeeding relationships
after moms return to work or school by mandating
employer accommodation for breastfeeding mothers.
5/20/2005: Local Lobbying effort gets federal boost
“Local breastfeeding advocates are celebrating. The
comprehensive chronic disease prevention legislation,
Healthy Lifestyles and Prevention America Act of 2005,
federally introduced yesterday by Senator Tom Harkin
(D-Iowa) contains four significant Sections related to
breastfeeding promotion.”
3/30/2005: Moms, Breast milk and Apple Pie

Ginny Burdick, co-author of SB 618: Workplace
Accommodation for Breastfeeding Mothers”
3/29/2005: Breastfeeding working moms tell the
legislature, “my paycheck or my baby’s health, don’t
make me choose!” “Nursing Mother's Counsel of Oregon
(NMC) has proposed SB618: Workplace Accommodation for
Breastfeeding Mothers which mandates employers give
unpaid flexible breaks and clean private places to
breastfeed or express milk, so mothers and children
continue to get the health benefits of breastfeeding
after moms return to work or school.”
2/7/2005: American Academy of Pediatrics Releases
Revised Breastfeeding Recommendations “A long-time
advocate of breastfeeding, the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP) is issuing a revised policy statement
on "Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk" to replace
its existing policy developed in 1997. The new
recommendations reflect new research on the importance
of breastfeeding.
7/26/2004: Nursing Mothers Counsel Announces Portland
Launch of Ad Council Media Campaign that Tells Parents
the Truth About Breastfeeding “With the Portland
launch of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign
Nursing Mother's Counsel of Oregon (NMC) anticipates an
increase in the number of Oregon children who are spared
the illnesses that have become accepted in bob-breastfed
children in the United States.”
